Our first full day on the road to North Carolina ended at Walton Lake, OR — a beautiful camping spot in the Ochoco National Forest a few hours northeast of Bend. Last week we realized we could squeeze one more trip with Laura and Kevin in before we left, so everyone packed up and headed to the lake.

That's Laura and Kevin up there.

We affectionately referred to this as the “Bonus Visit” since we thought our last time seeing them was the RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME plane ride they took us on last week.

Those are the San Juans out there.

The highlight of the weekend was seeing the Painted Hills outside the town of Mitchell. The hills are gorgeous — bright and deep colors of red and black and gold. Just beautiful.

The town of Mitchell is a bizarre little place we first learned about from the Malimish Crew who stopped there just  a few weeks ago.

Welcome to Mitchell. Population about 100.

It’s about 3 blocks long and includes a gas station, a bar, a diner, 3 town park RV spots and Judy’s Place, where I bought a pair of salt and pepper shakers for $2. You can read more about it here.

Food truck? Im not sure.

During this weekend-o-fun, Deke developed a bit of a toothache that escalated into the need to find a dentist, so with the help of Rhonda from ‘Streaming, we high-tailed it to Bend, Oregon for some convalescence.
